Stay balanced with Pilates . . .

How are you this week? Nearly time to take a break! I read somewhere that as creatures of habit, we humans need consistency first of all, but the next level for optimum lucious living is novelty! That’s why, as an instructor I like to challenge you in many different ways to hopefully keep inspiring you and of course help you get stronger and making life more enjoyable through better movement! We can tick off consistency if we keep coming to class, and keep up our home practice, and novelty is covered by new blocks in Conquer Gravity, the odd studio session to learn about our form on a much deeper level, Trigger Point Pilates to help us unravel those knots (and now of course the holidays!). Novelty helps us grow in a different way, by keeping things fresh, challenging us to move out of our comfort zone and keep on developing our Pilates mind-body complex! It’s all a bit of a balancing act….

Much like the middle way in many things in life, balance allows us to spend some time doing the things we know we love – and some time in stretch mode, literally and metaphorically. So here are my 3 top tips for best balance in your practice for the break:

1- Be consistent: decide on how many days you will practise at home (or away!) on your mat, and stick to it. (I would expect the number of days to be higher, since there are no classes during this period!)

2-Imagine you are in class, and don’t rush through your session. Remember your breathing is an important principle in Pilates and should be taken as seriously as the exercises themselves.

  1. Practise your routine with consistency, but try to add in one big challenge for the week- a new posture or something you know you struggle with. Break it down, take your time and see what you can achieve.

Remember the key to staying motivated is by setting the bar low, not too many long sessions and use a familiar routine with a twist (the challenge). I am looking forward to hearing after the break how you got on!

I’ll leave you with a shout-out to one of our fellow Pilates Studio and Mat class attendees, Liz Williamson. Liz is a Portobello resident and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate her on her wonderful achievement of publishing her lovely book. Fancy a great holiday read, anyone? José, Ernesto & the Maid

It’s hot, it’s humid, it’s Havana.

Trapped in an elevator, the Maid is pregnant and scared but the men with her are more intent on each other. Raul races to free them but first there is the body in the basement. Meanwhile Leonard must discover what Marianne wants with him. And then the Maid goes into labour.

Centred around the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, the story unfolds hour by hour over one day in summer 2011 when nothing and no one are what they seem.

Now available on Amazon, Kindle or paperback, this is a light allegorical tale published under the pen name of Ethan Newill

Sending you wishes for a wonderful week, and a remider to book in for our next Trigger Point Pilates workshop on August 31st (Click here to book) – it will be a busy one, so get in soon!

I have found that Conquer Gravity is a mind and body discipline. There’s an emphasis on maintaining form in the execution of each movement which demands total mental and physical concentration. I have definitely experienced benefits; mainly being increased power and balance.”
