How can we keep up with the 6 principles of Pilates during the holidays?

It just dawned on me that there is just over a week til we take a break, and so I wanted to remind you all to please make good use of the next 7 days and make sure you come to class! And then I thought: what a great topic to talk about this week; how can we maintain the 6 principles of Pilates even when we are on our holidays?! It’s nice to take a break, but no-one likes to get stiff, reduce mobility or strength. So how can we stay motivated in the hols?

Well firstly, a quick recap: what are the six principles?? Concentration, Control, Centring, Precision, flow, breathing- I hear you cry! And you would be correct. It’s helpful to think about where we feel these 6 principles in our bodies too:

  • Concentration By focusing on your mind-body awareness, the better connection you establish with your body, and the more benefits you gain from your workouts. It’s better to do each exercise slowly and precisely, than with incorrect form or posture. 3 perfect reps instead of 6 rushed ones!
  • Centering By paying mindful attention to the muscles of the core (the Pilates Powerhouse), you will help all of your bodies’ muscles function and develop more efficiently.
  • Control In Pilates, slow and steady wins the race. Control, rather than intensity or repetition, is key to performing the exercises correctly. All movements should be performed with precision, to gain the maximum benefits.
  • Breathing Controlling your breath with deep exhalations as you perform each exercise helps activate your muscles and keep you focused. Never underestimate the importance of correct Pilates breathing!
  • Precision Practice makes perfect. Proper form is essential to ensure you gain the most benefit and keep your body healthy.
  • Flow Each Pilates motion should be smooth and graceful. Try to create the grace of a dancer or a gymnast in your practice! A challenge, maybe but a worthy one!

I believe the key to staying motivated is by setting the bar low. Set yourself a target of number of consecutive days you are going to do your Pilates home practice, and stick to it. Make it achieveable by allowing yourself shorter workouts, and drip feed your body regular movement. Sometimes you give yourself a much more effective workout by keeping it short, for example 10-15 minutes of concentrated effort can be much more effective and achieveable than planning 30-40 mins and never finding the ‘right’ time.

So give that a go, and let me know after the break how you got on! I am excited and getting ready for taking a break, but not winding down exactly. I will be keeping up my movement regime – of that you can be assured!

Let me finish by reminding you of our next Trigger Point Pilates workshop on August 31st. Click here to book. The exact dates of our studio closure will be 12-22 July.

I have found that Conquer Gravity is a mind and body discipline. There’s an emphasis on maintaining form in the execution of each movement which demands total mental and physical concentration. I have definitely experienced benefits; mainly being increased power and balance.”
